Mokume Gane is a Japanese phrase that translates to English as "wood grain metal". The art of Mokume Gane was developed sometime during the 17th century by Samurai sword master metalsmiths as adornment for the hilts of their famed swords. These swords became symbols of the owners' status and wealth. The craftsmanship that went into the creation of some of these swords has become legendary, lasting through the centuries.
